When we compare university and college teachers with other professionals, the question automatically arises as to why should a doctor, a lawyer, an architect, an engineer or an administrative officer work for nine to ten hours everyday when a teacher has to work only for a couple of hours, at times even less.
Our present education system is decaying and deteriorating only because of the lack of accountability on the part of the teachers and damaging indifference of the authorities, The teaching community no longer present the highest standard of social behaviour it once did. It neglects its work , indulge in favouritism and is always busy in private tuitions. In the process it damages not just its reputations, but the entire society has as well .
There are few teachers who take teaching and research seriously, let alone other attributes which one might look for in them Mr.W.M.Welch has said," The personal influence of teacher in moulding the character of his /her student is the most important element in their education. In words he cannot teach.. his life talks more forcibly and sooner believed by children and adults. A teacher has to fulfill his responsibility towards his students, their parents, society and Nation by being a mediator of learning a scholar a judge a public servant a community leader and an agent of social change." Needless to say, Bihar's teachers are far removed from this ideal.
